FAQs

Below are a selection of the questions we often receive from potential clients. If you have a question that has not yet been answered you can get in touch via phone, email or online form.

Similar to Carpe Diem, which means seize the moment or opportunity, Foto Diem combines old and new. Foto is street jargon for photography while diem promotes the essence of ‘capturing the moment’ in a colloquial sense.

Confirming your date is extremely important as there are only so many days and weekends in the year! As we’re sure you know, wedding planning is generally done well in advance so it is recommend to reserve your photographer as soon as you can.

We predominantly work in and around the Wellington area but are more than happy to travel to weddings within New Zealand or even overseas.

Professional photographers are passionate about what they do – photography is their art! They invest years in training (in the case of our primary photographer Peter close to 20 years), and quality equipment to ensure the best outcome time after time. They put in a vast amount of effort to make sure they do your wedding justice. Wedding photography is a challenging genre that mixes together nearly all styles within the photography world – fashion, portraiture, character studies, landscapes, industrial (food and décor) and photo journalism to name a few. Add to that the fast passed and varying conditions of a wedding that cannot be recreated, and you need to make sure your photographer is dynamic and versatile, but also unobtrusive and guiding. Your wedding will be one of your greatest and most important days in your life, and as such it is an honour to be a part of it. We strive to capture not just the events of the day, but also the memories and the emotion. Keeping events light, personable and unobtrusive where possible.

This is open for discussion and will depend on your wedding, we are equally happy to work in formal wear, barefoot on the beach or with gumboots in the forest.

This will all come down to personal preference. While some couples may just want the highlights others prefer a more detailed collection. All of our packages include retouching where applicable, and treatment and cropping to provide you with a comprehensive photo bundle. The longer we are there, the greater the variety of shots we can capture. Packages are highly customisable according to your requirements and budget.

The amount of group shots can vary greatly, typically this will only be a handful of the closest family and friends but it can be as many as 30 individual shots which can take up to 3-5 minutes each depending on the size of the group and how quickly the parties can be rallied – it is important to remember that this will take up some bridal party shoot if it is not decided on prior to the day.

Wellingtonians will know how common it is to have four seasons in any one day. This being said we always plan for unexpected eventualities by having one or two wet weather venues on hand. It may be important to note that some of these venues have a permit or entrance fee.

An assistant is invaluable for a photographer and makes them much more efficient by helping to carry equipment and quickly setup or control lighting. They also provide a second observer to spot things like unbuttoned jackets, wayward button holes and flyaway hair.
A second photographer will literally double the effort and angles, increasing the range and availability of event coverage. Examples of this would be covering multiple locations (such as the separate venues where the bride and groom are getting ready), venue preperation shots, or larger events which may have several things occurring at the same time. It is important to book assistants and second photographers as soon as possible as they are subject to availability.

There are great locations for weddings throughout Wellington and New Zealand, especially if you are a fan of nature. Portraits can be shot almost anywhere and character studies are usually shot where the subject feels most at home.
In the case of a wedding, the selected location may have special significance to the bride and groom, or be beautiful in itself. The time of day and weather are also crucial in regards to the functionality of the location. It is always important to have a few more venues in case of emergency.
Where possible I prefer to visit multiple locations with the couple in person before the big day. It’s worth noting that most indoor venues require a permit or fee and may need booking if privacy is required.

The best light for photography tends to be towards the beginning or the end of the day – at sunrise and leading up to sunset. Light is one of the principle considerations for a photographer, but that being said we are adept at working with what we have at any time of day.

We take an agreed retainer, usually 25% or $500, at time of booking, and the balance a week prior to the event day.

Where possible we like to meet wedding couples on at least one occasion prior to the day. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other and discuss your needs in detail. We are also happy to visit locations with couples and take some test photos. These shots will give you some practice and an idea of what you like before the wedding.

We love shooting at new locations and are more than happy to travel nationally and internationally (at cost). Please contact us directly to discuss. Please contact us directly to discuss.

Yes, with the exception of the ‘on demand’ and ‘essentials’ packages, you will get high resolution copies of all unique shots taken during your wedding.
Your photo bundle will have all your shots in colour and black and white along with a range of creative colour treatments and cropping. Resolution is from a maximum of 20 megapixel depending on treatment in post-production.

Most of the photographic work occurs after the day and, depending on the package you selected, will be delivered in three stages:

  1. Approximately a week after your wedding… a snapshot of highlights. This will allow you to post some photos on your social media accounts and use some of the photos for thank you notes to friends and family.
  2. Around four to six weeks after your wedding… a slideshow presentation which encapsulates the full day. Most commercial wedding photographers will put your photos through an automated algorithm which creates four to six variants, from these they will select the ‘best’ ones to be furthered edited if necessary. This method requires minimal or reduced effort which decreases their outlay and time-investment.
Our method involves treating every photo individually to enhance the very best of each captured moment. After your wedding we will invest upwards of 60 hours editing on a ‘typical’ day-long wedding.
  3. Days or weeks after your wedding… a selection of albums, canvases, or framed photos as agreed upon prior to the day. Each one of these has a varied turn-around time, hence the mixed delivery times

We can send the photos to most social media or cloud storage platforms at your request. We will never blog/post your photos online unless we have spoken about it beforehand.

Wedding albums are included in some packages. Various options are available and personal taste will affect your preference greatly. We prefer the old style albums, on actual photo-paper, as we believe they yield a much better result compared to the magazine style albums available from most online businesses. We believe presentation is key to the products that we put our name to.

We may keep some location photos but it is unlikely that we will keep your photo bundle for a prolonged period. It is our recommendation that you back-up your photos to several, secure locations. We could keep some of our favorite photos of your day indefinitely and could always re-share if required.

It’s your big day and we will run with whatever you want. We can discuss the associated risks and options at one of our pre-wedding meetings if you would like. Some things to think about are a complete technology freeze, or if you would want photos from your guests during specific portions of the day.

There is no limit to the number of shots taken, the longer we are there the greater the number of shots. We would typically expect to produce at least 150-350+ edited images at a minimum, depending on your package, for most full-day packages.

Yes. However it will take a momentous illness to keep our photographers from turning up on the day.

We have years of retouching experience and apply this knowledge in post-production with an eye on creating exceptional images. Retouching your photos will include removing or blending things like spots, tones and blemishes where necessary using Photoshop and Lightroom. Most packages include all the time that is required for retouching but additional hours can be purchased at $50ph.

We use high quality Canon L series professional lenses and Canon DSLRs and Speedlight flashguns. We work with only the best equipment available to us –

There is no limit to the distance we will travel, however extra mileage beyond 80KM from the photographer’s base of operations is calculated at 94c per km and can be discussed.

Pricing Summary from Scope of Engagement in Appendix A, Section

The following terms govern the service received from Foto Diem Photography. A written agreement will be made between parties and will be governed in conjunction with the terms below.  This  agreement is between the "Client" or "Clients", hereinafter referred to as the "Client(s)", and Photographer: Foto Diem – Peter J. Fraser Photography and associates, hereinafter referred to as the "Photographer(s)". The only way to add or change this agreement is to do so in writing, signed by all parties. In the event that any part of this agreement is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remainder of this agreement shall remain valid and enforceable. Any agreement to waive one or more provisions of this agreement or any failure by one or both parties to enforce a provision of this agreement shall not constitute a waiver of any other portion or provision of this agreement. The summary of agreement and associated pricing can be found in Appendix A. This agreement should be read in conjunction with Terms- and-conditions detailed on the Photographer(s) web page as identified Appendix A which can change without prior notice. The provisions of this agreement are as follows:

Entire Agreement: This agreement contains the entire understanding between the Client(s) and the Photographer and should be read in conjunction with the Terms and Conditions on the Photographer(s) webpage, noted in Appendix A, which could change without prior notice.

Confirmation: A signed “Contract for Wedding Photography Services” and payment of the booking fee are necessary to confirm the stated wedding services from the Photographer(s) and to reserve the nominated dates and times of the “Wedding day and associated events” hereafter referred to as the “Event(s)”. If the Event(s ) are rescheduled, postponed, or canceled; or if there is a breach of contract by the clients, the retainer fee is non-refundable and shall be liquidated damages to The Photographer(s). The Client(s) shall also be responsible for payment for any of The Photographer(s)'s materials charges incurred up to the time of cancellation.

Pre-Wedding Consultation: This normally happens at the time of booking or as scheduled between the Photographer(s) and Client(s). The Client(s) will outline broadly what is required and the Photographer will advise on planning, logistics, and timings where needed. If required the Client(s) are welcome to request a meeting for an additional chat closer to the time of the wedding (about six weeks prior to the wedding date) to iron out the remaining details. Any alternative means of contact can be used by the Client(s) to contact the Photographer(s) up to the day before the day of the Event(s) to ensure that there have been no last-minute changes.

Cooperation: The Client(s) and the Photographer(s) consent to happily cooperate and communicate with each other to achieve the best possible result within the understanding of this contract. We recommend that the Photographer(s) be provided with a helper (usually the best man) who will point out key individuals to be photographed. The Photographer may also require the assistance of the best man in organizing family groups. The Client(s) also agree to give the Photographer sufficient warning of key events at the wedding to give the Photographer time to prepare e.g. Bouquet throwing, cutting the cake, speeches etc. Please note that not all guests at weddings like having their photos taken. In such cases, the Photographer will use his discretion but cannot be held responsible for a lack of photos of these people.

The Schedule: Our shooting schedule, style of working, and experience are designed to achieve a great set of wedding photos for the Client(s), accomplished with good humor and enjoyed by all concerned. Both the Client(s) and the Photographer(s) therefore agree that punctuality and cheerful cooperation are essential to producing outstanding photographic results. In cases where the wedding does not run on time (for example, extreme lateness by one of the Client(s) arriving to any Venue) we cannot guarantee to take our normal set of photos although in such circumstances we will do our absolute best to achieve the Scope-of-engagement within reason but in extreme cases shooting will commence at the scheduled start time and end at the scheduled end time. All additional time beyond the scheduled end time may be billed to the Client(s) as detailed in the Variance section below, at the discretion of the Photographer(s). Notification of any changes in schedule or location must be made in a timely manner and confirmation of receipt and approval must be obtained from The Photographer(s) by the Client(s).

Paparazzi Wedding Guests: All your guests will have digital cameras and all your guests will want to photograph the Client(s). In the spirit of cheerful cooperation, the Client(s) agree to give the Photographer(s) precedence over the guests in order to take the photographs required for the wedding services described above. We cannot be held liable for a lack of wedding photos if guests taking their own photos of the Client(s) interrupt or impede the Photographer(s) in any way.

House Rules: Note that the Photographer(s) are sometimes limited by rules imposed by registrars, Celebrants and venue management as to what can and cannot be done. For example, some ministers insist that no flash photography is allowed, and others will insist that the Photographer(s) shoot from a specific stationary location. In such circumstances, the Client(s) agree to accept the technical limitations that may be imposed on the equipment used. We advise the Client(s) to make themselves aware of the rules of the venue concerned and if necessary negotiate with the management bodies concerned to enable the Photographer(s) to achieve the best possible outcome on the Client(s) behalf.

Copyright Law: The copyright of photographs remains with the Photographer(s). The Photographer(s) grants the Client(s) permission to make copies of the images under the following conditions: The images taken by the Photographer are for personal use by the Client(s) and their friends and relatives. Sale, Publication, or any Commercial use of the Photographer(s) images is not allowed without prior written permission from the Photographer(s). Any such permission given by the Photographer(s) may require compensation of the Photographer(s) where the Client(s) or their elected beneficiary of the images have any Economic benefit from the use of the Photographer(s) images, as determined by the Photographer(s).

Model Release: The Client(s) grant the Photographer(s) and its legal representatives, heirs, and assigns, the irrevocable and unlimited consent to use the photographs of the Client(s) for editorial, competition, advertising, and any other purpose and in any manner, to alter the photographs without restriction; and to copyright the images. The Client(s) hereby release the Photographer and its legal representatives, heirs and assigns from all liability, profits and claims in connection with the images.

Limit of Liability: In the unlikely event that the assigned photographer from The Photographer(s) is unable to perform to the guidelines of these terms due to an injury, illness, act of God, act of terrorism, or other cause beyond the control of The Photographer(s), the Photographer(s) will try to book a replacement wedding photographer. Under normal circumstances, a second photographer from the Photographer(s) is there for the day anyway and this photographer will then shoot the day on his/her own. If the Photographer(s) are unavailable or unable to perform the agreed Scope-of-engagement and a replacement photographer cannot be found by the Photographer(s) then liability on the Photographer(s) is limited to a refund of any payments received by the Client(s).

The Client(s) indemnify The Photographer(s) for any consequential losses suffered by the Client(s) or any third party. The Photographer(s) is not liable for any Event(s) or Client(s) guests or Third-party liability claimants that participated on or for the Event(s) – any such claims against the Photographer(s) will be transferred, directed to and accepted by the Client(s) for liability determination and settlement.

In the unlikely event that digital files have been lost, stolen, or destroyed for reasons beyond The Photographer(s)'s control, including but not limited to camera, hard drive, or equipment malfunction, The Photographer(s) liability is limited to the return of all payments received for the Event(s ). The limit of liability for a partial loss of originals shall be a prorated amount of the exposures lost based on the percentage of total number within the Scope of engagement expected to be delivered to the Client(s). The Photographer(s) is not liable for the loss of images beyond the lesser of the final delivery of all Scope-of-engagement images included in the package or 90 days post the Event(s).

Booking Fee/Deposit: In the event of the Client(s) canceling the wedding for whatever reason the booking fee is non-refundable. It will be considered as liquidated damages to the Photographer(s).

Expense Incurred: The Client(s) is responsible for all reasonable travel, accommodation, meal and transport costs over and above what is agreed in the package price, incurred by the Photographer(s) to complete the agreed outcome in the Scope-of-engagement in Appendix A, Section 1.

Travel expenses: All travel expenses are based on the distance between the Event(s) location(s) and The Photographer(s) studio address. For all Event(s), the first 80 kilometers roundtrip of motor vehicle travel is included. All travel in excess of 80 kilometers roundtrip is charged at recommended AA rates for the Photographer(s) vehicle. Any additional fees, such as toll and parking could be passed onto the Client(s) where applicable.

Safety: The Photographer(s) reserves to right to terminate coverage and leave the location of the Event(s) if the Photographer from The Photographer(s) experiences inappropriate, threatening, hostile or offensive behavior from person(s) at the Event(s); or in the event that the safety of the photographer from The Photographer(s) is in question. The Client(s) will not receive any rebate or discount in the event of such an occurrence and will be liable for any damage caused to the Photographer(s) equipment by the Client(s) guests or suppliers for the Event(s).

The Photographer(s) will not be held accountable for failure to deliver images of any individuals or any objects at the EVENT(S).

Venue and locations limitations: The Photographer(s) is limited by the rules and guidelines of the location(s) and site management. The Client(s) agrees to accept the technical results of their imposition on The Photographer(s). The Client(s) agree to pay for any costs associated with collecting any outstanding fees and costs incurred in preparation for the Event(s).

Variance: Any variance from the Scope-of-engagement detailed in Appendix A, Section 1, will be considered as Out-of-Scope tasks required to be performed by the Photographer(s) to perform his duties. Out-of-Scope tasks extend to any request made of the Photographer(s) before, on or after the Client(s) nominated wedding date for which there is no formal written agreement between the Client(s) and Photographer(s).
